Big Wangs, the sports bar for DTLA

Big Wangs - what kind of name is that for a sports bar?

Big Wangs, with a funny name for a Sports Bar, is located in the heart of Downtown LA. I visited there with a friend, Mr. J, for a short happy hour and to just check out the place.

The happy hour deals were pretty good along with the appetizer specials. Though I admit we only had a couple of beers and some onion rings, I was more interested in seeing what they did to the old Tranquility Base space. Since they have a prime street spot near a corner, they are bound have good traffic.

I think we counted over 20 flat screens inside and outside the space. Their large outdoor patio with big screens will certainly be the spot for after work happy hours and the upcoming March Madness office pools.

I will try to give them a full review later.

What to Order: Beer Battered Onion Rings
What not to Order:

Parking: Sucks, only 3rd party lots available across the street. Street parking is limited by meters and time.

Very nice outdoor area.

The Beer Battered Onion Rings. The batter is crunchy and flavorful.

They have a deal for 50 wings and 3 pitchers of beer for USD 85.00. I might get sick of the wings. But I also think it is a little pricey.

Looks like a fun place with the big airy ceilings.

Loads of big screens all around.

  1. Nice. My better half worked 100 yards from the one in Hollywood and we always talked about going - she said it smelled great when she walked by - but then her office moved to Larchmont before we ever got around to trying it. I did not realize they had one downtown, I will try that one of these days.

  4. Went by with couple of friends to watch the Lakers a few weeks ago. For Game 1 of NBA Finals I thought I would get my group together to watch at the new downtown restaurant, but the experience was utterly disappointing.

I called to make a reservation in the AM. I was told that they are no longer taking reservations as they did a week ago. I was told to just show up and take a table myself, but no reservations. Bummers, but whatever I will go in very early along with my work stuff and netbook and I thought it would all be good.

I arrive at the restaurant at 4pm, 2 hours before game time. I was told as I entered the restaurant that I could not take a table and wait for my group, but that they are now going to just seat people as they come in and no reserving seats. I explained how we came into the restaurant just days before and how I did call for a reservation only to be told the rules changed. I then followed the new rules and in between the time I called and my arrival, they changed the rules again. UNBELIEVABLE! I was then told to take the table and if people do not show up they will start to place others at the table. I thought that was fair, but moments later the hostess decided to change her mind again and just started to give away my seats.

Problem was that our group spent days emailing etc regarding getting together. I win out in promoting Downtown LA and this great new restaurant. People are trekking in to Downtown not only from DTLA but from the Westside, South Bay, Eastside and SGV.

It was too late to make arrangements to go to another location and I had a group of massively unhappy campers wondering WTF.

Our day of watching the Lakers was screwed as they only allowed us 2 seats for a group of 12. We had to split up and see the game elsewhere and missed some the game. UNBELIEVABLE

So basically my gripe is that I understand it is a new venue, but that they changed the rules on me several times and was not at all very compassionate with our plight. Customers are not valued at this establishment. They just didn’t care. We have a good size group of Downtown professionals who gather to drink and happy hour and more so watch the Lakers over the next 2 weeks, but we highly recommend that people lay off this restaurant. Customers are not valued here.

  5. I only went to Big Wangs in order to be a part of a "live" showing of Champions of Champions Elite they were showing, but I was also surprised by their fast, friendly service; their original drink creations; and the way their barstools were just the right height and didn't wobble.

I intend to go their again on the 22nd to watch the Kings Cup muay thai tournament.

Of course, being in Downtown LA, parking can be a bit pricy; but I think it was worth it. Great sports bar. And one of the only sports bars willing to showcase a martial arts event!
