Mariposa of Neiman Marcus

Excellent view. Creative plating. This is a perfect ladies' lunch spot. Complimentary consumme and fresh baked popovers to whet your appetite. I sent back the day's "special," because they overcooked the sea bass (what a shame). I ended up loving the catch of the day over a bed of al dente pasta. The chocolate dome (not pictured) dessert is rich and fluffy all at the same time. The macadamia nut ice cream (not pictured) is simple and sweet. The macadamia nut cream pie is a great way to end the lunch. Located on the second floor of the Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, HI.

Tenkaiipin

Thank goodness they moved my favorite ramen spot from Waikiki to Kapahulu in Honolulu. The soup is simply outta this world. Can't be replicated. Even better than LA's Little Tokyo eateries. The soup is supposedly imported from Japan. You can't take the orders to go. The broth is insanely rich and worth any pounds you'll gain. Enjoy!

Four Seasons Hotel Kona, Hawaii

The appetizer was a lobster ravioli with red pepper sauce. Great concept, but missing a kick. The asparagus salad was blanched perfectly, but needed a bit more dressing drizzled. Main course consisted of mahi mahi, braised short ribs (wow!!!), and wasabi mashed potato (can't go wrong). Good job plating. Worth it if you want to dine at a fabulous resort with excellent service and beautiful views, otherwise ask the locals where to get good grub.

Cocktail of the Week - Godmother

A Godmother is a derivative of the Godfather cocktail - which is Amaretto and Scotch. The Godmother - which is Vodka and Amaretto, is a sweet drink that goes well with Cigars. Basically any sweet cocktail will go well with cigars.

Personally, I just discovered the drink a couple of years ago. I usually have this drink about once a month. Its a simple drink that is heavy in alcohol - with both Vodka and Amaretto.

One story I'd like to share, was when I was at a cafe in Ningbo, China - waiting at the airport. I noticed on the menu that they served alcohol. I promptly asked if they knew how to make a godmother. My friend and I expected them to not know how to make it. So, I asked them if I could go back to their bar and make the drink. After getting clean glasses and some fresh ice, I proceeded to make us a couple of Godmothers. Quite satisfying till we boarded our plane.

Godmother
*1.5 oz. Vodka
*1.5 oz. Amaretto

ArtBites

ArtBites is a unique concept in which food & cooking is taught together with Art history. I first heard about ArtBits on KCRW's Good Food radio show.

ArtBites features kids classes as well as adult classes with food and history. Ranging from courses featuring Italian history and Chinese history with food accompanied. Courses are taught at Museums, as well.

In addition, they have special courses in which they go to Paris, France to learn more about photography, art, and food.

L'Amour Cafe

Located in the back of a mini mall in Monterey Park, L'Amour Cafe is a hidden gem that specializes in traditional Cantonese cuisine. Monterey Park has always been known for cantonese faire - especially with the late night cafes and dim sum palaces. But L'Amour Cafe goes away from that tradition to offer a non-cafe style ambience. They strive to offer higher quality selection without the expanse of a large banquet style dim sum restaurant.

My friend and I ordered the shark fin soup, the chicken soup, and ginger chicken. In addition, we also ordered the abalone. The shark fin soup is similar to that of the soup served in large banquet restaurants. Not exactly one of my favorites soups, I tend to favor clear soups/consumes that aren't too thick. They serve the shark fin soup with a side of rice and vinegar. You're suppose to add rice to the soup to thicken it. Not exactly to my liking. The ginger chicken - steamed to somewhat resemble the Hai Nan chicken rice - was quite good. I like the flavor of this chicken more than anything. In addition, it also has good texture. The white meat wasn't too dry either. I would fully order this again and recommend it to other people. The Chicken soup, which is more like chicken in chicken broth was also good. Comparable to the chicken soup from Din Tai Fung - I would argue that this soup is right up there. The abalone, which is a rarity in restaurants this small size, was a nice surprise. Abalone is typically expensive. Not exactly what I would order the abalone was good.

All in all, I would recommend L'Amour Cafe - for some quality Cantonese dishes. Parking is free. Expect to spend about $15+ per person.
